Tome Fall 2015.
Fashion and dance have always had a powerful synergy, thus it was no surprise that Ramon Martin and Ryan Lobo were inspired by Belgian dance legend Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker for Tome’s Fall collection. Tenacious and distinct women are often the brand’s muses, thus the influence didn’t stop there: they also were motivated by style icon Donna Karan. The vision seemed a bit puzzling at the thought of it, but it all came together quite seamlessly.
Both De Keersmaeker and Karan began making an impact on their respective industries in the mid’80’s and that era could be seen in cinched waists, power suiting, and eye-catching neon PVC. Black and olive pointed-toe pumps from Sarah Jessica Parker’s SJP collection attached the looks to the present and let the ensembles play centerstage.
Karan is famous for dressing the modern-day woman at every point of her day and the brand channeled her love for office-ready attire with a knee-length stripe jacket, functional trousers, sleeveless vests, and wearable turtlenecks that could last in anyone’s wardrobe for years to come.
Martin and Lobo made a great case for red carpet-ready wear with bias-cut drapey LBDs that undoubtedly were guided by Karan’s trademark aesthetic. Red pumps and zipper-accented patent jackets injected necessary flair as the looks were pretty pared-down otherwise.
Classic stripes accented shirt dresses, forgiving pants, collarless button-front shirts, and handkerchief hem skirts. The timeless pattern on a blouse and trouser combo in two different hues was bold, yet wearable when layered over a two-tone turtleneck and blanketed underneath a patent-pocket crop jacket, while a stripe tunic felt feminine with a silky black trench and pleated mini skirt.
The blend of structure and fluidity and plastic with rich textures was pleasant and surprisingly easy to digest. Sensuality was balanced with whimsy, which is no simple accomplishment for any designer, but was executed to perfection here.
Thoughts on Tome’s Fall lineup?
