Let’s ignore the fact that she arrived after the show ended. Thanks to Rihanna, emerging designer Adam Selman’s show was one of the most highly anticipated. The hype began with that sheer gown drenched in crystals that she wore to the CFDA Awards designed by none other than Adam Selman. But beyond dressing the world’s favorite pop star, Adam Selman has displayed incredible creativity, particularly in his Spring 2015 Ready-to-Wear collection that made its way down his first full-fledged runway show at New York Fashion Week. “I also studied what my friends are wearing, so Spring is kind of this New York City girl with a dirty face of makeup meets Harumi Yamaguchi in a cool Jane Birkin way,” said the designer. Oh, ok.
The sporty and youthful ready-to-wear collection was inspired by the ’80s. Selman pulled themes from Japanese
airbrush artist Harumi Yamaguchi and the idea to use pearls from scenes
of the made-for-TV movie, Beverly Hills Madam. Pearls uniquely
embellished an entire sweater and dress, dangled from separates, and
lined the cutouts of shirt collars, waists, sleeves, and hemlines.
Separates ranged from a t-shirt that sported a spilled nail polish logo
to extra wide-leg pleated trousers, tweed coats, shorts and miniskirt
combos. An airy white linen fabric was used for overalls and billowing
shirts.
Pops of color were seen in the accessories. The retro looks were accessorized with pearl chokers, Le Spec cat-eye sunglasses, cross-body duffle bags, and visors wrapped by a scarf with a front bow knot. In true sporty-chic fashion, all looks were paired with the ever-so-versatile Converse Chuck Taylor sneaker.
Each of the 24 looks definitely gave off a cool, easy-to-wear right off the runway vibe. Colors flowed from blacks and whites to hues of pinks and yellow brushstrokes, and bright red coordinated with pastel purple.
