Show Review: Stella Jean Spring 2015.
Stella Jean’s Fall show produced enough industry chatter that her Spring collection (which debuted on the runway today) was littered with fashion heavyweights ready to take in the Haitian and Italian designer’s most recent wares. Haiti was the focus of the assortment, from a “Port Au Prince” jersey tee paired with donkey motif earrings to a maxi skirt depicting the landscape of the country. Silhouettes from the 50’s and 60’s gave the lineup a retro-inspired flair while prints and patterns were contrasting to jar the eye.
Illustrations of everyday life in Haiti were sprawled across peplum-detailed pencil skirts, collared shirt dresses, high-waist full skirts, and tie-waist sarong inspired designs. Printed pumps with bow-accents and colorful raffia sandals anchored the looks, immersing them even further into bold femininity. “Haiti” brooches were nice touches and tributes.
Prints were impossible to miss including plaid, polka dots, bamboo patterns, and giraffe spots. A flamingo-decorated tee felt fun and vacation-ready, while a pair of fish-adorned cropped trousers were a bit nutty, yet still wearable. A striped blazer captured the focus on the classic pattern that so many designers have had this season.
Bigger and bolder was better for Jean here, whether that pertained to silhouettes, colors, or adornment. The collection perfectly balanced statement-making design with functionality, though it clearly spoke to the eccentric woman who loves having all eyes on her. There was quite a bit to digest, but the brand made sure it was all done in an alluring and irresistible way.
What do you think of the latest from Stella Jean?
