Less than a year after his tragic death, the Grammys are reportedly set to honor Prince. According to The New York Times, Music’s Biggest Night will include a star-studded tribute to the Purple One.
In a story published this week, the paper reveals that “an all-star musical tribute to Prince is expected to be one of the show’s splashiest moments” at next month’s Grammy Awards in Los Angeles. Currently, it’s unclear which stars will participate in the homage.
The big moment could mark a shift in streaming, as well. Services like Spotify may use the tribute as a launching pad for making Prince’s music available. In the past, the late icon kept most of his music off services like Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube. Now, Spotify is looking to unveil online teasers and a possible ad soon, if all goes as planned.
Of course, there are some hurdles for streaming platforms to overcome. Among those obstacles are challenges surrounding the singer’s estate. L. Londell McMillan, a lawyer who worked with Prince and is currently advising some of the estate’s administrators, said it will also depend on Prince’s estate.
“When you are looking to release product, you’re looking for the right moments,” he said. “The Grammys may represent a moment in time, but it’s not certain that that’s going to be the case.”
Since Prince’s passing last year, issues surrounding the estate have grown contentious. Currently, members of the estate are at odds over who should be its co-personal representative and over where the music should be available. Legal issues, including a lawsuit with Jay Z, have also plagued the estate since Prince died without a will.
Despite all of this, it does appear that the Grammys will honor Prince with a special tribute. Hosted by James Corden and featuring a performance by Adele, the Grammys are set to air Sunday, Feb. 12, on CBS.
